Jackie Warner’s Protein Shake Breakfast

Posted by Fitness Guardian on May 16, 2007

Lift.jpgIn a Bravo interview, Jackie Warner was asked for her protein shake recipe. She mentioned that she uses this low glycemic protein shake as part of her breakfast every morning. It’s also the mandatory breakfast for her skylab weight loss participants. This is what Jackie Warner Eats for breakfast:

The Skysport Protein Shake Recipe:

2 cups of organic mixed berries
1 scoop of mega green powder
1 serving of whey protein powder
1 tbsp of flaxseed oil (Cold Pressed)
1 tbsp of liquid amino acids
1 cup of ice
mix in blender

In addition to the shake she also has one cup of oatmeal.

I watched the Reunion show and Jackie actually gave the ingredients for this shake… however, she mentioned Cold-Pressed Flax Seed Oil. I don’t know if there is any other kind of flax seed oil but I thought I’d mention it in case there is.

    2. Michelle Thu, 17 May 2007 19:25:01 PDT

I also watched the reunion special but didnt get a chance to right the recipe down. I figure if someone of those skylabers thats are heaview then me used it i should definitly give it a try. Its the oatmeal part i might have a hard time with.

    3. Jewelly Fri, 18 May 2007 10:31:26 PDT

Does anyone know if you need to add water to Jackie’s shake? I made this shake as mentioned in the recipe above and it comes out so thick it doesn’t mix.

    4. Lori Fri, 18 May 2007 11:41:36 PDT

Does anyone know if powdered amino acids would work just as well?

    5. Fitness Guardian Fri, 18 May 2007 11:50:26 PDT

Jewelly – Add water to the shake to get your preferred thickness and enhance mixing of ingredients…

    6. Fitness Guardian Fri, 18 May 2007 12:06:30 PDT

Lori – Some people believe liquid amino acids are better absorbed by the body and less denatured than powdered. However, in both types you’ll probably be providing your body with a serving that is more than it can absorb at one time so you’ll have a cushion. Plus – the whey protein provides all the essential amino acids (those not produced by the body) you’re covered even more.

So it really shouldn’t matter between liquid and powdered amino acids…

    7. Marina Sat, 19 May 2007 00:22:17 PDT

This sounds like a lot of shake. Is it really one serving? Also, does Jackie eat plain oatmeal or does she spice it up at all? Thanks.

    8. Luckymel Mon, 21 May 2007 15:01:36 PDT

I purchased ingredients for the shake…turned out well with water.
I do have a stupid question…do I need to refrigerate the liquid amino acid? It does not say but almost everything else says best kept if refrigerated.

    9. Fitness Guardian Mon, 21 May 2007 16:26:42 PDT

Luckymel – Liquid amino acids are very stable and have quite a good shelf life when stored in a cool, dark area. You will not need to refrigerate them unless the label says specifically to do so.

    10. Liz Tue, 22 May 2007 11:00:52 PDT

I primarily do cardio but do not do weight training. I don’t know much about the ingredients in Jackie’s shake, but is there any reason to change/eliminate some ingredients if I will not be doing weight training?

    11. Fitness Guardian Tue, 22 May 2007 11:20:41 PDT

Liz – The ingredients in this shake will also support your general health and vitality. Even if you’re not doing weight training it’s important to supply your body with quality protein and the other micro and macro nutrients provided by the ingredients in shake.

If your cardiovascular exercise is performance based and of high intensity/duration you may want to add some raw oatmeal to the shake. This will increase its unrefined carbohydrate content to support your increased glycogen needs.

    12. Janice Tue, 22 May 2007 15:12:43 PDT

      Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone is aware of the tea that Jackie was referring to on the reunion show..she mentioned one in the morning and one in the evening(I think). I also wanted to know if I am a person that does not have a normal workout routine if this shake will add any weight??? Thank you for any assistance!

    13. Ashley Tue, 22 May 2007 23:33:41 PDT

What brand Mega Green Powder is used in this shake.
And I also would like to know what tea Jackie is referring too as well.
      thanks

    14. Felicia Wed, 23 May 2007 13:46:03 PDT

After I purchased the ingredients for the shake, I realized that I was given Organic Flax Oil with Omega-3, not Flax seed Oil. Was that wrong, beacause I can return it? Also should I have gotten one with omega 3-6-9? Thanks for your help.

    15. Fitness Guardian Wed, 23 May 2007 13:54:10 PDT

Felicia – You’ll be fine with the organic flax oil – the difference between that and “flax seed oil” is semantic. Both contain the important EFA’s (Essential Fatty Aids) which is the primary reason for using flax…

    16. Audrey Thu, 24 May 2007 09:59:58 PDT

      Hi,
Is there anyway that I can get the SkyLab diet, not just the breakfast? I heard Jackie run it down on the reunion show but was wondering if I could get it in its completion?
      Thanks
      Audrey

    17. Jessica Sun, 27 May 2007 12:33:41 PDT

      Hey guys,

Did this shake make anyone’s stomach hurt? Does it take a few times to get used to? I was doubled over in pain every day I drank one. I had to stop.

      Thanks,
      Jessica

    18. Fitness Guardian Sun, 27 May 2007 14:31:21 PDT

Jessica – Sometimes whey protein can cause some gastrointestinal issues and bloating. I would cut back on the amount of whey protein powder you use in the shake and then increase it gradually as you start feeling better…

    19. ALK Mon, 28 May 2007 11:06:36 PDT

I’m a new mom, and am currently breastfeeding, is this protein shake safe for me to consume, or will it adversely affect my baby?

    20. Fitness Guardian Mon, 28 May 2007 11:30:38 PDT

*Disclaimer – This comment is for general information and opinion. You should always check with your physician before you apply any advice that you feel may affect you or your baby.

      - ALK – During pregnancy you donated a tremendous amount of your body’s nutrients directly to your baby in utero. Now that you’re breastfeeding you continue to donate those nutrients through your breast milk.

Drinking a shake with the ingredients Jackie Warner used on her show will provide your body with a convenient way of replenishing vital nutrients your body needs to be healthy. In addition, during the postpartum period your body has an increased need for essential fatty acids (EFA’s) – Flax Oil is a great source of them (and does not carry the toxin concerns of using fish oil). I am NOT providing medical advice here – but I can’t think of any reason for the ingredients in this shake to have a negative impact on you or your breast milk.

    21. Kristin Mon, 28 May 2007 11:37:28 PDT

Can anyone comment on the serving size? I just made the shake and it’s A LOT…seems like 2-3 servings. With the oatmeal it just seems like a big meal. I guess breakfast is important but wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on the serving size??

    22. Fitness Guardian Mon, 28 May 2007 12:02:44 PDT

Kristin – Serving size is relative based on your body. If the size feels like too much just scale down the ingredients proportionately until you find a serving size that works best for you… Cheers!

    23. Audrey Tue, 29 May 2007 10:16:47 PDT

Can I get the diet that Jackie gave the Sky Lab clients? I did get the shake recipe but wanted to know the rest of the diet.
      Thanks!!

    24. Chuck Tue, 29 May 2007 11:42:24 PDT

Hi, I recently purchased the ingredients for the shake. GNC sold me a multi-Oil supplement in pill form. Could that be a substitute to take with the shake instead of in the shake? It’s suppose to be a combination of omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids. It does not mention anything about “cold pressed”? Will taking the “pill” form be as effective? Will it be any less potent? Thank you for your advice!

    25. jenny Tue, 29 May 2007 11:47:47 PDT

Just wondering, would I be able to take this shake twice a day morning anfternoon and then a meal in between? Would this make me just gain weight?
      Thanks, Jenny

    26. Fitness Guardian Tue, 29 May 2007 16:49:12 PDT

      Hi Jenny,
You want to make sure the total calories you take in per day don’t exceed the amount of calories you burn per day. If you are adding another shake in addition to your other meals you might be adding too many calories to your daily diet. This will result in fat storage.

If you add a second shake, it’s probably best to eliminate or reduce the quantity of one of your other meals. A great strategy for fat loss is spreading your total calories across 4-5 meals a day. So if you make your lunch and/or dinner a little lighter and add a second shake as a mini-meal in between you should not gain weight. But as always you have to experiment and find out what works best for you…

    27. Fitness Guardian Tue, 29 May 2007 16:57:08 PDT

Chuck – Some believe that cold pressed flax oil is more available to the body than the pill form. Oils can become unstable and rancid when heated so if the manufacturing process in making the pills involved heat there is the possibility the oil wouldn’t be as potent. However, as long as you are getting your supplements from a reputable manufacturer you should be getting the same nutritional benefits as if you consume it in other forms.

You can certainly leave the flax oil out of the shake and take it in pill form. Some people enjoy how the liquid flax oil makes the shake smoother in texture nutrients are nutrients to your body – any way you get them will work.

    28. L Wed, 30 May 2007 17:55:49 PDT

I’ve noticed where there are accounts of whey protein making one feel bloated and having less than desirable effects on the gastrointestinal system. Is this correct?

Also, is this shake good for one to take if they simply want to workout without weights, ie…power yoga, pilates, etc.? I have no desire to lose weight..in fact, I could probably afford to gain a few pounds but i do need to tone. Will Whey powder have a negative effect at all for someone with gastrointestinal problems?

    29. Leah Mon, 04 Jun 2007 05:18:35 PDT

I need to know what is the total amount of calories in this shake since I do want to count calories for each day as well.

    30. Heidi Mon, 04 Jun 2007 21:22:24 PDT

Well, I just tried my first shake and it was pretty good! I did have issue with the thickness as well, so the next time I’ll be adding some water. There was more than enough for one serving so I just put the rest in the fridge for tomorrow!

I also take a daily liquid vitamin and calcium supplement. Would these be ok to mix into the shake as well?

    31. Rich Sun, 10 Jun 2007 20:40:49 PDT

I just made my first protein shake today after buying the ingredients at The Vitamin Shoppe and it looks green and doesn’t smell so great. I used less than 1 cup of strawberries and used 1 whole packet of Vibrant mega green powder. It really doesn’t taste so bad, I can taste some of the strawberry in it. I think I used too much green powder and not enough strawberries. It tastes really creamy and maybe I used a little too much whey protein powder. Please let me know what you think.

    32. gloria Tue, 12 Jun 2007 15:28:21 PDT

I’m a beginner at this. I think I’m allergic to protein powder. Are they all made the same? I don’t remember the brand that I used a few years back but it flavored. I drank it every morning for about 3 weeks and noticed that I had an itchiness all over my chest and neck area the whole time and it stopped the day after I stopped taking the powder. If I am allergic to it, what I can do? Also, is it ok to put orange juice in the shake instead of water or should I just stick with water? Maybe this is a dumb question…but why are protein powders and green powders so expensive? It isn’t cheap to try to be healty is it!

    33. Fitness Guardian Tue, 12 Jun 2007 16:14:53 PDT

Gloria – You might have been exposed to an allergen that was introduced to the protein powder during the manufacturing process (peanuts, etc…) That said – I’ve never come across someone allergic to whey protein. So it may be worth trying another brand and of course discontinuing if you have a reaction. You may also want to switch to a soy or egg white based protein powder as they will still provide you with all the essential amino acids you need. You can put orange juice in the shake, but just be aware of the extra calories.

Protein and green powders are expensive because of the manufacturing process required to extract the nutrients from their hosts. It needs to be done in a controlled environment and requires dedicated and specialized equipment. If you want to save money you can make sure you’re eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and lean protein naturally. Then you can cut back on the amount of powder you use per serving which will make the supplements last longer. Best of luck…

    34. Elizabeth Sat, 16 Jun 2007 20:44:57 PDT

Can anyone tell me if this shake is compatible with the Atkins diet regimen?

    35. Laurie Thu, 21 Jun 2007 18:06:19 PDT

Is this shake safe to take for a PREGNANT woman?
There doesn’t seem to be anything strange in it…
I’m not looking to “lose” or “gain” extra weight, just a super healthy meal for the morning…Thanks!

    36. Krissy Fri, 22 Jun 2007 15:13:20 PDT

How much do you need of this shake? I know that Jackie has this in the morning wtih oatmeal but in place of that what can I have?

      ~Thanks~

    37. Carol Fri, 13 Jul 2007 22:37:09 PDT

regarding the amino acids – is the Braggs amino acid liquid adequate?? my daughter bought some thick syrupy pink amino acids —

does it make any difference which one you use

and what is the purpose of the amino acids anyway??

    38. Amy Sun, 15 Jul 2007 23:46:20 PDT

Hey, Ya I agree, not enough liquid. I add low-sugar apple juice and blend.
Ms Warner says “no” to sugar but putting water in this shake sounds nasty,

    39. Tabulous Wed, 18 Jul 2007 10:07:50 PDT

Liquid Aminos – just re’cd my products today and is Liquid Aminos supposed to look and taste like soy sauce?

    40. Melissa Sat, 21 Jul 2007 07:06:34 PDT

Hey. I have been drinking the shake a little over a month now. The first day I didn’t think I was going to be able to get it down – must have made it wrong. Actually the first day I tried to drink it without a straw and I think I wasn’t really vibbing the smell to be honest. When I got the recipe off of the tv I didn’t see anything about ice. I have been using 2 cups of frozen mixed berries and no ice and it works great. I mix up all of the other ingredients in a cup with a little water and then I blend the berries by themselves with a little water as well. Then I combine and mix away. The shake is awesome. I think I might actually be addicted to it because I feel great after I drink it and I totally crave it. I has so many damn calories in it though that I don’t think I can afford to add another one in the evening. I don’t see anyway I could get oatmeal down as well though in the morning. I guess no luck on getting the rest of the sky lab diet? Well she has to sell something I suppose. Although the $80 sports bras should cover it lol.

    41. Beth Thu, 02 Aug 2007 01:48:02 PDT

Hey. May be a stupid question..but what does the shake do for you exactly? Help with weight loss? More energy? Thanks!

    42. Fitness Guardian Thu, 09 Aug 2007 17:24:30 PDT

      Hi Beth,

To answer your question (it’s actually a great question) regarding “what the protein shake will do for you”. In my opinion – it’s a convenient all around way to get the nutrients your body needs to function it’s best. Here’s what it can do for you:

      - The Whey protein and amino acids supports lean muscle tissue and is low glycemic which helps promote fat loss.

      - The Green powder is loaded with antioxidants and phytonutrients for enhancing energy and health.

      - The Flax Oil provides omega 3 fatty acids which been shown to provide dozens of significant health benefits by reducing inflammation in the body.

      - The Berries are high in fiber and antioxidants that can increase immunity and support fat loss.

The shake also has an optimum protein/carbohydrate/fat ratio. It’s low glycemic which creates a hormonal response in the body that’s ideal for burning fat and keeping your blood sugar levels stable.

Bottom line – drinking the shake is an easy way to give your body the nutrients it needs to look and feel your best.

    43. Dina Tue, 14 Aug 2007 15:02:54 PDT

Hi I really would like to know which brands Jackie uses in her shake becasue there are so many to choose from. The Whey protein also comes in flavors (vanilla or chocolate) would that add calories.

    44. Caly Thu, 23 Aug 2007 17:03:56 PDT

Same question as Dina……there were so many to choose from, does it matter what brand?

    45. Cherish Sat, 25 Aug 2007 07:43:08 PDT

Well… my concern is that Jackie can afford the fruit, fresh or frozen, everyday… but the cost for it here in PA… at two cups per day is expensive! It’s why people don’t eat more fruit and vegies… the costs are crazy $3.00 per pound of tomatoes ? 2.00 a pound for apples or 6.00 for two small pints of blueberries? We’re gettin’ it coming and going in our own country thanks to the Christian white politisians who drove our farmers out of business so they could EX-port it to 3rd world countires who pee in their strawberry fields like Mexico workers did in 2000 and all California Strawberries ahd to be recalled. The worlds gone mad. BUt the shake is good, I hear from two of my friends who use it but they could spend upwards of 100.00 a month just for the fruit.

    46. Eric Sat, 01 Sep 2007 13:06:24 PDT

Since the shake is hard to mix, since there is so much dry ingredients, I just use a little bit of orange juice to get it to blend.

    47. Abby Sun, 21 Oct 2007 15:58:38 PDT

Just wondering what people are using for the “Mega Green Powder”. I’m not finding anything with that exact name. I put a packet of GNC’s Maximum Greensâ„¢ Complete powder in the Protein shake and it was the most awful thing I had ever tasted! Even with the berries and water & protein powder to dilute the stuff, it tasted like a huge glass of soggy brocolli, not to mention it looked horrible (all dark green).
Also, why do you add amino acids (components of protein) to it if you’re also putting protein powder in it?

    48. Jenny Fri, 16 Nov 2007 12:48:12 PST

I want to try this shake, but I don’t see the nutritional information. I need to fit the calories, fat, protein, & carbs into my diet.

      Does anyone know it?

    49. Nick Wed, 02 Jan 2008 19:18:18 PST

The shake is best when mixed with Macro Greens and if you like a berry flavor and more antioxidants use the Miracle Reds powder from MacroLifeNaturals.com. This makes the shake really tasty! Thank you Jackie for for continuing to be a inspiration to so many of us!!

    50. Lauren Tue, 08 Jan 2008 00:23:02 PST

      Hello Fitness Guardian,

Based on the above Protein Shake Breakfast recipe, about how many calories are roughly contained in each serving? Thanks.

    51. Bevin Sun, 06 Apr 2008 11:35:28 PDT

Hi, I acidentally ordered Flaxseed Oil, but I don’t think it is Cold Pressed. Can someone explain the difference to me? Will the shake be less healthy if it is not Cold Pressed?

      Thanks

      B-

    52. Fitness Guardian Tue, 08 Apr 2008 17:09:38 PDT

Bevin – heat, light and oxygen diminish the quality and effectiveness of the essential fatty acids (EFA’s) found in Flaxseed oil. Cold pressing helps ensure the oil does not oxidize.

However, other manufacturing methods can maintain the quality and potency of the oil. If you purchased your flaxseed oil from a reputable retailer you should be getting all the healthy benefits the flaxseed oil provides.

    53. yesenia Tue, 22 Apr 2008 12:55:07 PDT

      Hello-
I have seen alot of questions on how many carbs and calories the breakfast shake has but havent seen an answer. Can someone let me know thanks.

    54. Marcia Thu, 22 May 2008 02:19:36 PDT

I have a question… I do not work out in the morning, but I see that Jackie, and her Sky Labbers are working out all day long. Is this a shake I take in the morning regardless if I don’t work out until 7pm? Or should I drink it before working out? Is it more effective as a breakfast drink or as a pre-workout energizer protein booster?

      Thanks!

    55. Fitness Guardian Thu, 22 May 2008 22:23:38 PDT

Marcia – the nutrient profile of this protein shake makes it useful in multiple ways. No one specific time is best. That said, you already commented on some great times to have one. Here are some of the ways I’ve used it…

Drink it first thing in the morning for a quick and easy balanced breakfast.

Drink it pre-workout (30 minutes prior) for energy.

Drink it post-workout (within 30 minutes after) to replenish glycogen reserves and accelerate exercise recovery.

      Hope this helps…

    56. Brandy Wed, 28 May 2008 23:22:58 PDT

In regards to whey protein issues with people. I have the same problems with digesting it. It is a rich source of dairy, and I have done food allergy testing to find out I have a dairy allergy among a few other food allergies. Soy can also be hard on the belly for someone with a sensitive stomach, and makes most gassy! Your best bet would be a natural protein powder made without soy or dairy. Arbonne makes one with Pea protein isolate as the protein source. Good luck!!

    57. Kim Thu, 05 Jun 2008 08:52:29 PDT

Hi, If your stomach hurts, switch to Goat Whey (and only one scoop, not one serving) I get so bloated with any kind of whey protein. Goat protein is the ONLY thing I can take without getting bloated. This means I am actually absorbing the protein, as opposed to my body rejecting it.

    58. REW Thu, 12 Jun 2008 12:34:01 PDT

Does anyone know when the protein bars will be for sale?

    59. cristi Mon, 15 Sep 2008 19:20:31 PDT

like many of the questions above I do not see the answer regarding the skylab total day diet. Only the shake and oatmeal for breakfast. Anyone know as I am new to this. Thanks

    60. Ashley Borrero Fri, 23 Jan 2009 17:34:26 PST

I work out in the evenings always later than 8pm. When is the best time for me to drink the protein shake??

    61. Jenny Fri, 23 Jan 2009 17:55:07 PST

Well if I was to repeat what my trainer is always “pounding into my head”. You should have protein through out the day, especially after your work out to help with the repair of you muscles you just pounded.

I haven’t actually tried this shake yet, I have to use up some of my other products first. But I make sure I have protein with breakfast, with my mid morning snack, at lunch, midafternoon snack and then at dinner too. For the snack I usually aim for a whey protein shake (usually light muscle milk) and I also have a half shake or a serving of low fat cottage cheese as soon as I get home for the repair.

      Hope this helps.
